Why a green server light is not enough

The difference between server health, carrier-path quality and actual user experience.

Three different layers

Machine health only tells you that CPU, memory and services are working. Path quality covers latency, packet loss, DNS, TCP and UDP behavior between a user and the server. User experience also depends on the client, protocol, carrier and destination.

What should a status page show?

Public status should show healthy node counts, measurement freshness and active incidents without exposing IP addresses, sensitive capacity or security details.

Operational decisions also need multi-carrier probes and metrics for connection success, handshake time, latency and packet loss—without recording browsing destinations or traffic content.
